The pressure gauge on my boiler is reading about 0.5bar in the red zone.?

Yes , just turn on the tap slowly. If you know you have to bleed the rads then put a bit more pressure in (2bar), because it will fall as you release air out of the system. Don't bleed the radiators until this is done. Your pressure can be around 1.5 bar ok, and even slightly higher.
